The Happening

Critically-acclaimed Christian band MOSAIC recently met with broadcasters and other media representatives at the 2012 National Religious Broadcasters Convention, held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville. The band was at the convention to promote its current CD, Teach Us.
"With it being our first experience at NRB, we weren't sure what to expect, but we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to meet and spend time with others in our industry," says band member Jonathan Martin. "What we found is that as we gathered together with others at the convention, we built each other up and encouraged one another in our callings." Thousands of Christian broadcasters, programmers, ministers and others participated in the convention, which is presented annually by the National Religious Broadcasters.

"I was so excited to be able to attend my first NRB convention! Not only did I meet many incredible people who are so like-minded and focused on serving others, but I also had the opportunity to learn about many tremendous programs and organizations and the amazing work they do across the world in Christ's name," Scanlan said.

US radio morning drive-time personality and recording artist Perry LaHaie has been making frequent trips to Nashville as he works on his upcoming 2012 release. "Last summer I began to sense a growing passion to do a new record," LaHaie says. "I knew God had given me a quiver full of compelling new songs." For the new project, LaHaie has assembled a production and songwriting team that includes Grammy-winning producer Andy Hunt (Guy Clark's Blues Singer) and songwriter Jeff Pardo (Mandisa's "Victorious," Francesca Battistelli's "Unpredictable"). LaHaie is in the midst of finishing the project, which is slated to be released late summer.

7CORE MUSIC is an independent alternative Christian record label formed in January 2012 by Trevor and Rachel Michael. The aim is to support and promote artists who are passionate about God and their music, giving them the opportunity to record and release their material. Trevor has many years experience as a record producer, studio and live engineer. He has worked with artists such as Matt Redman, Delirious, Elim Sound, Jennifer Knapp, Jessy Dixon, Trent, Duke Special, Rebecca St James, and Tree 63. He says “Over the years I’ve worked on all kinds of projects from big budgets to no budgets. Bizarrely some of my favourite projects have never made it to the market place, beyond a table at the back of a concert hall. 7Core Music is our way of addressing this. The music you’ll hear on our label, may or may not sell millions, but it’s all music that we love, and we believe it’s music that will change lives.” The first half of 2012 sees two main releases. March 26th saw the release of ‘Counting Days’ a 4 track EP by The Joy Brigade, released as a download only. On the 4th June 2012 the new album from Liverpool’s Ian Yates ‘Good News’ will be available both as a download and on CD. www.7coremusic.com

THE CITY HARMONIC : I Have A Dream (It Feels Like Home). (Kingsway : KWCD3281)
This is the first full length album from this band, the previous release being a six track mini album. One of the songs from that CD, "Manifesto" also appears on this one too, although it's a different edit here. This band are an energetic sounding rock worship outfit from Canada, who remind me a bit of "Kings of Leon" or perhaps a slightly more subtle U2 in places. A lot of these songs are quite anthemic, with multi layered backing vocals in the background adding nicely to the atmosphere of a lot of the songs. The second track "Spark" features a section of Martin Luther King's famous speech, which is quite interesting. This is a good CD all round, indeed it is quite refreshing to hear a worship band with a real spark of individuality and energy about them. Definitely recommend this one. 10/10 Andy Sayner.
THE HUDSON TAYLORS : The Lord Bless and Keep You. (Kingsway : KWCD3292)
Noel Richards, Brian Houston and Wayne Drain formed The Hudson Taylors a decade ago, with no fixed plans beyond a few gigs together and an opportunity to record in the USA. There, in Nashville, they turned up to simply ‘see what happened’. The result was Hurricane - their 2002 album, released by Kingsway. Now, some ten years on, the follow up is here. When you get three individuals like this, all taking their turn to write and sing, the result can be a little dis-jointed. But, that’s not the case here. There’s a foot tappin’, bright start with the title track, which is quickly followed by a rougher sound that reminded me of UK artist Scott Anthony Wainwright. ‘As For Me and My House’, I found that to be a really engaging song, while ‘Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow’ followed suit. I must admit that I enjoyed Noel Richards’ vocals the most, and especially on ‘Draw Me To Your Sacred Place’. ‘Be Still My Soul’ is sung in a prayerful manner, while ‘Breath of Life’ enjoys the sound of similar worship. An entertaining album, from three anointed singer/songwriters. 8/10.
YAZZ : This is Love. (YazzMusic : EMMPCD9)
I guess no matter how many years pass, Yazz will always be fondly known for her 1988 #1 hit, ‘The Only Way Is Up’. Her voice may have mellowed a little since those times, but her faith is stronger than ever. This mix of self-penned and cover songs, finds her in doing what she does best, and makes for an enjoyable listen. The title track is sung acappella, and Yazz says that she always puts one track on her album in this style as God loves the human voice. ‘Summer Rain’ is a lively, jazz funk affair, and I really enjoyed this song. Yazz then goes into a lighter mode, with Bob Marley’s ‘Redmeption Song ’ sounding like a summer smash. ‘Portrait’ and ‘People Get Ready’ sound similar, but ‘Narrow Road’ hits all the right notes when celebrating the joy of choosing the right path, and following Jesus. Her vocals really soar on the Hillsong classic ‘Praise’, and the chorus gets a boogie woogie feel. It’s not an album that will instantly wow you, but it may well be one of those slow burners, that take time for you to really appreciate. 8/10.
IAN YATES : With Love. (www.7coremusic.com)
Ian’s first album, ‘The Hope & the Glory’ scored pretty well with NFN upon it’s release in 2010. His follow up is scheduled for release in June this year and as a taster, he has made this single available for free download. It’s an attack minded track, with a lot of energy behind it. The basic theme is to live our lives sharing Christ’s love to the world, and that’s no bad thing. Ian works the lyrics well within the song, and I can see it getting plenty of airplay across Europe. Hopefully, the album will follow suit. 8/10
JEREMY RIDDLE : Furious. (Elevation : ELE1712D)
This is Jeremy Riddle’s 3rd studio album, although listeners may well have heard some of these songs before on the latest Bethel Church release. Riddle himself says “It’s hard to come up with words that depict the magnitude of Christ’s love – the depth and width of it. Furious doesn’t work outside of the context of love; we tend to translate the word as angry, but I see it as a super-powerful force; stronger, deeper, broader than our vocabulary can fully describe." With Dove winning producer, Ed Cash at the helm of most of the songs, the production is first class, and things kick off with the atmospheric ‘Fall Afresh’. There’s a triumphant call for Jesus on ‘Love Came Down’, while ‘One Thing Remains’ claims that no matter what we do, your (Jesus’) love never runs out. ‘Aquitted’ is another good song, and I also liked the chorus and guitar sounds of ‘You Are Good’. Riddle certainly can write easy to digest lyrics, and on the slower ‘One Thirst and Hunger’, he’s at the top of his game. ‘Glory to the Lamb’ is filled with powerful worship, and makes for an enthralling song. If you’ve not heard of Jeremy Riddle before, perhaps now is time to rectify that. 9/10
'Soul Survivor & Momentum Live 2011' (Kingsway : KWCD3273)
Here we have a 2CD release of live performances from Soul Survivor and Momentum events in 2011, featuring worship leaders Beth Croft, Tom Field, Matt Redman, Jamie Rodwell and Tim Hughes. It's a bit surprising that it stretches over 2 CDs as there are only 15 tracks in all – 10 on CD1 from Soul Survivor, 5 on CD2 from Momentum. Somehow the Soul Survivor disk in particular seems to capture the energy that must have been experienced by any who were there, and happens to include all my favourite tracks. It gets off to a rousing start with two similarly upbeat deliveries – from Beth Croft and “Matt Redman feat. Jorge Mhondera”. The third track is my first standout – nicely delivered by Tom Field, the beautifully written 'One thing remains'. This includes a repeating chorus riff 'Your love never fails, never gives up, never runs out on me' that stays in your consciousness long afterwards. The following two tracks – the reflective 'For us' and the more powerful 'You never give up', both featuring Beth Croft, are also well written songs, well performed. My second standout however – another Beth Croft performance – is 'Arms of grace' with its beautiful lyrics and melody, excellently arranged and performed. The following track, Tom Field with 'Chains are broken' is also a good one. Altogether this is a worthwhile release, although the Momentum disk is weakest songs-wise. The main downside for me is that sound quality is of the usual over-compressed kind, so can sound pretty dire on a good system. 7/10 Dave Deeks.
WALKING WITH KINGS : Leap of Faith. (http://walkingwithkings.com/)
What happens when Terry Chism, the worship leader from Noonday Baptist Church, Marrieta, Georgia, embarks on a project with the seemingly paradoxical Rich Ward from secular rock band Fozzy? The answer is Walking with Kings, a Christian rock band inspired by the sounds of Stryper, Journey and Boston. Though there is a huge variety of Christian rock bands out there, there very few Christian bands in what I would call the traditional or melodic rock genre. So, as a musician heavily influenced by this style, I viewed the Walking with Kings album with heavy and hopeful interest. It’s not a worship album though some songs, particularly the opener “Mention of Your Name” are worship songs. It is instead an album to be listened to, to be savoured or maybe even enjoyed with a heavy dose of air guitar. The songs are excellent and there is a surprising amount of variation between them with at one minute, driving rhythms in the vein of “Helloween” and in another a more classic “Bon Jovi” style sound. Indeed, in the title track both of these are evident in the same song. Another song of note and probably the best of them all is “Friends” - in the days when singles were more important, this song would have undoubtedly been the first one off the album. It’s a tremendous debut and what’s more it is available as free download from the band’s website. Yes you read that right - free! Just google their name and you’ll find it. You won’t be disappointed. 10/10 Robin Thompson.
THE JOY BRIGADE : Counting Days. (www.7coremusic.com)
The band formed in 2001, shortly after Adrian Thompson’s previous band, Split Level, had decided to call it a day. Over the next two years, they played various shows in the UK, Germany and Sweden before disappearing. Originally recorded live onto two inch tape, these tracks have now been released by former band member, Trevor Michael, on his 7Coremusic label. Now, as a great fan of the late Split Level, I found these tracks to be very reminiscent of the iconic band. Thompson’s vocals still ring out with all the passion that I remember, and The Joy Brigade’s demise is a sad loss. The title track is pure guitar driven pop/rock, and would make a sure fire hit single. ‘Salt Water’ and ‘Talk Show’ are more medium paced, but the quality of the band still remains. The closing track, ‘Simpler’ tells us to “stand where the light shines brighter than the sun”. It’s another rocky affair, and one that I played instantly again. The sound is raw. There have been no overdubs, no fixes, but that’s what makes it so good. 9/10
GHOSTREE : Ghostree EP. Online only (independent)
UK four piece Indie band Ghostree have released their debut EP as an online only offering (for the time being at least) on Soundcloud. However from first impressions, this release has the potential to go further as a hard copy CD. Those that have read any of my previous reviews will be aware that I am partial to something a bit different than the run-of-the-mill praise & worship offerings & this sure fits the bill in that respect. From the outset with the opening track “Hope” you’ll notice this isn’t your usual fayre with a rather atmospheric, slightly dark & possibly theatrical atmosphere & frontman Haydon Spenceley adds to this aura with his moody vocals - certainly fits the “indie” label. “You They See” is a little lighter on the ears & has a good rocky feel to it. My favourite on the EP has to be “Glorious” though as I found it to be one I would be likely to listen to repeatedly & not get bored. It’s by no means a fast track but it still packs a punch in terms of the powerful God-centred praise lyrics & is certainly useable in a church setting – albeit with a little modification! “Save My Day” follows on in a similar vein with “Hallelujah” completing this offering at a slightly more relaxed pace, but for me took a while to get going. Difficult one to categorise is this – has a splash or REM in some respects with a dash of Coldplay. Some may find it a bit too out of the ordinary but this grew on me! Musicianship from this 4 piece outfit is excellent throughout & I have to admire some of the drum patterns & some of the rhythms could be occasionally seen as a tad experimental but it does work. I look forward to seeing what else these guys can produce as I am sure there are greater things to come! 8/10 Simon Redfern
